What is biodiversity?

Biodiversity is composed of any and every living thing! The term comes from “biological diversity” and acts as a measure for how diverse an ecosystem is — including human and cultural biodiversity, or how our different cultures and communities intertwine with the environment.

Why is biodiversity important?

All aspects of our environment, including the fresh air we breathe and the water we drink, depend on the existence of biodiversity. Healthy ecosystems naturally fight greenhouse gas emissions, pollution, and other environmental imbalances, so it’s crucial we do our part to recognize and protect the intrinsic value of biodiversity.

Unfortunately, anthropogenic activities often contribute to negative ecosystem changes that result in massive losses of biodiversity worldwide. One example is deforestation for reasons like agricultural land expansion. By clearing out acres of land, humans wipe out countless species of plants, which also serve as homes to many living organisms that now become forced to relocate — and if unsuccessful, become at risk of extinction; According to the Center for Biological Diversity, as many as 30 to 50 percent of all species are possibly heading toward extinction by mid-century. This is a critical issue because every species plays a pertinent role in the functioning of its environment, so the extinction of one species alone can potentially mean the collapse of an entire ecosystem, thus jeopardizing its immediate biodiversity.

So, what can we do to preserve the biodiversity of our planet?

Here are easy steps YOU can take to help preserve biodiversity:

1. Take shorter showers!

Water brings life to forests, rivers, and soils. It encounters different species of fungi, bacteria, and algae as it passes through streams, rivers, and lakes, which act as natural filtration systems. Therefore, lessening the pressure on the water supply greatly helps increase biodiversity!

2. Start a garden!

Growing plants (especially bee-friendly plants) invites more biodiversity! When bees move from flower to flower, this helps plants reproduce through pollination which in turn, preserves biodiversity. One thing to keep in mind is trying to source plants from local plant nurseries so that you help support your local ecosystem. In addition, these local plant nurseries will be able to inform you which plants are an invasive species to your area.

3. Respect nature!

On walks in the park or hikes on trails, make sure to stick to the path! It’s important to respect the local wildlife and biodiversity by allowing it to thrive with little human interference, like refraining from picking flowers, littering, and trampling wild plants.

4. Vote with your dollar!

When shopping for anything, especially food and clothing, make sure to do your research and support brands that value sustainability and biodiversity. Two good labels to look out for are FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Certified and Rainforest Alliance Certified. Both advocate for the conservation and human rights of those inhabiting the land where the products are sourced from.

5. Legislation!

Last but not least, utilize your literal vote! Support international and local wildlife protection legislation like the Endangered Species Act, and vote for candidates who advocate for conservation.

In conclusion, biodiversity is important as it keeps our ecosystem healthy —allowing us to sustain life! Make sure you are helping to preserve biodiversity daily by taking some of these easy steps into consideration!
